Meet Master Jonathan Norwell – Jiu Jitsu Instructor in Leeds

I’m Master Jonathan Norwell, head Jiu jitsu instructor at Kaizen Martial Arts Academy in Leeds. With over 21 years of experience in Taekwondo and more than 14 years in Jiu Jitsu, I’ve dedicated my life to martial arts and helping others achieve their goals on and off the mats.

For me, martial arts is about more than learning techniques – it’s about building confidence, discipline, respect, and personal growth. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced student, my aim is to create a supportive and challenging environment where everyone can learn Jiu Jitsu at their own pace.

Martial Arts Background

  • 5th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo
  • 2nd Dan Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu
  • Competitive experience in Taekwondo, K1, MMA, and grappling tournaments
  • 3rd Kyu in Okinawan Kobudo (traditional martial arts weaponry)

This broad background allows me to teach Jiu Jitsu with a well-rounded perspective, combining practical skills with traditional martial arts values.

Inspired by Tradition, Focused on Students

My coaching is shaped by the guidance of Grand Master Bob and Scott Hammond of West Yorkshire Martial Arts Academy, whose teaching continues to inspire how I train and support my students here at Kaizen.
